A Ridden Road homeowner in Jarrettsville was woken up by loud “pops and bangs” and found a fire inside an attached garage before scrambling to get outside with her son and one dog, officials say.
According to the Maryland Fire Marshal, the flames extended to two vehicles that were parked outside the garage, but crews from the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company and other agencies were able to contain the bulk of the fire to the garage.
However, the rest of the home suffered extensive heat, soot, and water damage, causing an estimated $500,000 in damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The dislocated family is now being assisted by friends, officials said on Thursday morning.
